about

Composed in 1981 and premiered and recorded at Harvestworks/Studio PASS in NYC on November 23, 1981, Innosense is an opera set in a basement in the Lower East Side post-Apocalypse. The nature of the catastrophic events are never revealed or explicitly discussed and manifested only in fragments of sound from the characters Bio/logicals, The State, and Myth. These characters are prerecorded and played back from stereo cassettes, one for each of the performers each using a foot volume pedal. The materials for these characters includes vocal and instrumental sounds made by Sharp; appropriated sounds from television and radio; sound effects from various libraries; and texts written by Sharp or appropriated from sources including natural history works and political tracts and either sung or read by Victoria Vecna and Felipe Orrego. The three "live" characters are Three Improvisers, here performed by Charles K. Noyes on percussion, Lesli Dalaba on trumpet, and Sharp on fretless electric guitar, soprano sax, and bass clarinet. The Geoclock is a prerecorded percussion track performed by Sharp which plays back continuously throughout the one hour work.
